Uber driver took riders to airport, then tried to burglarize home: cops

An Uber driver dropped off a vacationing couple at a California airport — and then tried to break into the home they were renting during their stay, police said.
The driver, Jackie Gordon Wilson, took the unnamed couple to San Francisco International Airport last Thursday and then drove back to the Airbnb they rented in San Mateo to break into the residence, news station KGO-TV reported.
However, police said his attempt was thwarted when a surveillance camera busted him approaching the residence.
Wilson, 28, then was caught on camera a few blocks away breaking into another home, but when authorities arrived, the place had been ransacked, according to KGO-TV.
Several items were stolen, including a Holocaust-era heirloom inherited from the homeowner’s girlfriend, police said.
“He tore apart the whole house, tossed everything. Every piece of furniture moved. He opened my safe,” the homeowner, identified only as Scott, told the news station.
Scott uploaded footage of the suspect on the community home security app Ring — where the neighbor hosting the Airbnb saw the video and shared it with his recent guests, according to KGO-TV. They identified him as their Uber driver.
The next day, police located and arrested the driver, who was in possession of several stolen items, KGO-TV reported.
Wilson was also wearing the same clothing as seen in the surveillance footage, officials said.
“This case proves the benefit of a home security system particularly with video,” San Mateo police told SF Gate. “Law enforcement is solving more crimes thanks to surveillance cameras and license plate reader systems.”
Wilson was booked into the San Mateo County Jail on charges of burglary and attempted burglary.
